Once you get the carpet up this is what you will see. Cut the carpet with a utility knife under the nose of the landing. Start at the top of the stairs and remove the carpet with the vise grips and utility knife. I started at the bottom corner of the stairs by using a crowbar to pry the carpet away from the tack strip.

I started with the bottom step by using pliers to pull carpet away from stairs. I removed all of the padding tack strips nails and staples. Pull up all the carpet pad. Keep moving the screwdriver until the tack strip comes up.

To take up all the carpet tack strips just place a flat head screw driver under the strip tap in with the hammer and gently pry it up. If not cut the carpet near the top of the top riser grab the cut end and pull the carpet off the stairs by hand. One year ago i ripped up all of the beige carpet on my stairs.
